32. To the highest bidder
Vienne clung to the back of Gelegen, who trotted his mare while looking from side to side. Finally, he pulled on the reins, bringing the horse to a halt. Alvia stopped right beside him.
"Ah, this is it," Gelegen said contentedly. "And it looks like we've arrived before it's over." He added in relief.
The princess relaxed when she heard that the auction was still going on; it had been her fault that they had arrived late, she had had to urinate and it had taken her much longer than usual. She didn't know if it was the lack of habit to relieve herself in the open, or if it was the constant tension of knowing that at any moment they could run into the boy she had to face, but her body seemed to be having a hard time adjusting to her new hectic way of life.
They stood in front of a white stone house with a reddish roof, at its entrance was a crowd of people, hurrying to enter. A man armed with a spear pointed at them, and directed them to turn and leave the horse in a crowded stable just behind them.
The veteran had had an idea, he had weighed the possibility that the boy they were looking for had been captured and that, if so, there were two possibilities regarding his whereabouts. The first, that he had been condemned like most unickeys to be confined in one of the settlements along the Tirhan territory. The second, and more likely according to Gelegen's hypothesis, was that he had been sold as a slave to some rich Tirhan who wanted to get his hands on a rare specimen with brown hair and eyes, a combination not at all common in those lands.
His second theory was why they were in front of the largest slave-selling house in all of Tir Torrent.
The princess threw the weight of her body to the side and lifted her leg to get off the mare. As her boots touched the lush grass Zyrah was waiting for her with her tongue out. Gelegen got off the horse and led it to the stable, where he left the mare in the hands of a long-haired young man who, seeing that they were armed, indicated that they would not be allowed to enter.
"I'll wait for you here; I'll take a walk around while you amuse yourselves buying slaves." Alvia told them. Vienne was not surprised, from the instant Gelegen had proposed to visit that place her aunt had made no secret of her lack of enthusiasm. The princess handed Crystalline to her aunt, while Gelegen gave her his sword and gun.
Then the veteran bent down to pick up Zyrah, and the three of them entered the Slave House.
"Don't worry, Princess Vienne," Gelegen calmed her before entering quietly, "at these kinds of auctions the best lots are always saved for last."
The hall was crowded, Vienne felt a slight dizziness as a result of the mixture of perfumes emanating from the adorned and bejeweled Tirhan visitors who had come to the event.
